Nathan

NathanandDavidAfter King David had his faithful servant Uriah murdered in an attempt to conceal the origin of her pregnancy (2 SAMUEL 11:1-27), which displeased God (1 KINGS 15:5), God sent Nathan to confront David by presenting the situation to the king in the form of a story of a man who had committed the same type of sin. The Bible records David’s reaction to Nathan’s story in 2 SAMUEL 12:5-6, “So David’s anger was greatly aroused against the man, and he said to Nathan, “As the Lord lives, the man who has done this shall surely die! And he shall restore fourfold for the lamb, because he did this thing and because he had no pity.” 2 SAMUEL 12:7 reveals the Lord’s anger through His prophet. “Then Nathan said to David, “You are the man!” The King James Version translates Nathan’s words as, “Thou are the man!” Chapter three of Emily Bronte’s novel sees Mr. Lockwood dreaming that he has spoken out against a famous pastor for preaching on sin. Then the pastor, “after a solemn pause, leaning over his cushion,” cries, “Thou art the man!”
