Chapter nine of the novel tells of a midnight storm, fierce enough to knock down a part of a chimney stack. In the aftermath, Nelly says, “I felt some sentiment that it must be a judgment on us also. The Jonah, in my mind, was Mr. Earnshaw…” Nelly uses Jonah’s name as a noun, naming the cause of the damage. JONAH 1:4-16 divulges that Jonah was the cause of the storm, God’s judgment on Jonah’s disobedience as described in JONAH 1:1-3.
