The Sun Stands Still

Andrew_Marvell_SketchIn one of the most spectacular miracles in all the Bible, and after “the LORD cast down large hailstones” on the enemies of His people (JOSHUA 10:11), Joshua “spoke to the LORD…and he said…’Sun, stand still…and moon’…So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and did not hasten to go down for about a whole day. And there has been no day like that, before or after it, that the Lord heeded the voice of a man…” (JOSHUA 10:12-14). Andrew Marvell’s speaker in To His Coy Mistress acknowledges in his concluding thought that we cannot duplicate Joshua’s miracle: “Let us roll all our strength, and all / Our sweetness, up into one ball; / And tear our pleasures with rough strife / Thorough the iron gates of life. / Thus, though we cannot make our sun / Stand still, yet we will make him run.”
