The Sun Stands Still

In one of the most spectacular miracles in all the Bible, and after “the LORD cast down large hailstones” on the enemies of His people (JOSHUA 10:11), Joshua “spoke to the LORD…and he said…’Sun, stand still…and moon’…So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and did not hasten to go down for about a whole day. And there has been no day like that, before or after it, that the Lord heeded the voice of a man…” (JOSHUA 10:12-14). Andrew Marvell’s speaker in To His Coy Mistress acknowledges in his concluding thought that we cannot duplicate Joshua’s miracle: “Let us roll all our strength, and all / Our sweetness, up into one ball; / And tear our pleasures with rough strife / Thorough the iron gates of life. / Thus, though we cannot make our sun / Stand still, yet we will make him run.”
