Pearl_of_great_priceIn the opening paragraph of chapter 6, Hawthorne notes that Hester “named the infant ‘Pearl,’ as being of great price,—purchased with all she had,—her mother’s only treasure!” Also, in chapter eight, Master Wilson admonishes Pearl with great solemnity, saying, “”Pearl, thou must take heed to instruction, that so, in due season, thou mayest wear in thy bosom the pearl of great price.” Jesus tells His disciples that “the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking beautiful pearls, who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it” (MATTHEW 13:45-46).
