A Thief in the Night

From Tales of Mystery and ImaginationUsing one of the most well known similes in the Bible, the Apostle Paul reminded the Christians in Thessalonica that they knew “perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night” (1 THESSALONIANS 5:2). Poe’s first two sentences of the closing paragraph of The Masque of the Red Death are: “And now was acknowledged the presence of the Red Death. He had come like a thief in the night.”
