Chaucer describes the Friar as: “…the beste beggere in his hous; / For though a widewe hadde noght a sho, / So plesaunt was his In principio / Yet wolde he have a ferthing er he wente…” Medieval friars commonly repeated In principio erat verbum during their travels about the countryside which means “In the beginning was the Word,” (JOHN 1:1).
