God’s Name

The third of the 10 Commandments of Moses, as recorded in EXODUS 20:7 is, “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.”  The Pardoner preaches against “fals sweryng” by saying, “Bihold and se that in the firste table / Of heigh Goddes heestes honurable, / Hou that the seconde heeste of hym is this: / “Take nat my name in ydel or amys.”
