JOHANN HEINRICH FUSELI-XX-Lady macbethIn His famous Sermon on the Mount, Jesus Christ says, “…love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you” (MATTHEW 5:44; see also LUKE 6:27). In Act III, Scene i, while securing the services of the men who will murder Banquo, Macbeth reminds them that Banquo is their enemy and that they should disregard Jesus’ commands recorded in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke by saying, “Are you so gospell’d, / To pray for this good man and for his issue, / Whose heavy hand hath bow’d you to the grave, / And beggar’d yours forever?”
