LigeiaPoe refers to the false goddess Ashtoreth, also referred to as Astarte and other variations of the name, who presides over his wedding to Ligeia: “…if ever she, the wan and the misty-winged Ashtophet of idolatrous Egypt, presided, as they tell, over marriages ill-omened, then most surely she presided over mine.” Ashtoreth is the Canaanite and Phoenician goddess of love and beauty in JUDGES 2:13, JUDGES 10:6, 1 SAMUEL 7:3-4 and 1 KINGS 11:5, 33. Sometimes referred to in literature as “the queen of heaven,” alluding to JEREMIAH 7:18 and JEREMIAH 44:17-19, this false goddess who had real worshippers is the Canaanite and Phoenician equivalent of the Greek Aphrodite and the Roman Venus.
