As the novel closes, in chapter 38, Jane says of St. John Rivers, “The last letter I received from him drew from my eyes human tears, and yet filled my heart with divine joy: he anticipated his sure reward, his incorruptible crown.” The King James Version of 1 CORINTHIANS 9:25 reads, “…every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we [Christians] an incorruptible.” This unfading crown for holy living, for self-control, is for the steadfast racer who consistently brings the flesh under the Spirit’s control.
