Eden

Barbara FritchieWhittier’s tribute to Barbara Frietchie describes “the clustered spires of Frederick” as surrounded by fruit orchards: “Round about them orchards sweep, / Apple and peach tree fruited deep” and then describes the orchards as “Fair as the garden of the Lord.” This, of course, alludes to Eden. What life was like in God’s garden is described in vivid detail in GENESIS 2:8-25. Satan’s invasion of Eden, Adam’s and Eve’s sin, and God’s response to their sin in driving them out of the garden of Eden and placing “cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the tree of life” is recorded in GENESIS 3:1-24.
